    If the payment system can be figured out, this ecommerce industry can explode. Two problems with credit cards in countries like Indonesia are (1) fraud, whose cost is borne by the merchant and (2) low penetration rate. Because of (1), the bar to get a credit card is made higher, which leads to (2). It's very different from, say, the US market where people with no income can get a line of credit.

    But banks in Indonesia are attempting to get into the ecommerce business as well. An example is belibarang.com (Citibank).

    voucherwow.com, deal.com.sg, superdeal.sg, beeconomic.com, bigdeal.sg – i also sneak-peeked a few others tht are up but not fully functional yet. i think groupons are definitely gaining big time in singapore, but perhaps we need to use smtg other than PayPal, as the speakers suggested. PayPal costs are quite high for the merchants, isn't it?

    if ecommerce is to survive in singapore, there needs to be a payment gateway that costs less. looking forward to having a huge full-fledged shopping site in singapore ala amazon.com – soon, i hope!
